An Article That Talks About The Atkins Diet And Why It Is Good For Diabetics

July 30, 2010 · Filed Under Cooking Tips

Low carbohydrate diets, like the Dr. Atkins diet, are becoming super popular because of Jennifer Aniston. It’s the latest craze among weight watchers. Medical personnel really like the diet for different reasons – it’s great for diabetics!

In fact, the low-carb diet that is so popular for weight loss actually turns out to be better for diabetics than the traditional low-calorie low-fat diet formerly recommended. Research has since proven that the old diet that simply restricted calories was detrimental to diabetics’ health.

Why the all-out attack on carbohydrates? Easy. Diabetes is a condition where a person is unable to properly absorb and process sugars and starches. Carbohydrates are very damaging to people with this condition, as they are starch and break down during digestion into sugar.

In a low carbohydrate diet, no more than 5 to 10% of the daily calories are taken in from carbs. Instead, the body is fueled mostly through protein and fats. This lets you feel full and satisfied.

It’s critical that people not experience severe hunger pangs. Feeling very hungry is what most often leads to binging on sugary foods. Feeling full protects you from binging, and this can be established with high fiber foods as well.

What is unique about low carb diets is that you can eat anything you want if it doesn’t have many carbs in it. You still don’t want to stuff yourself but it is a very open diet that surprises many people.

Here are the foods that are usually approved in low-carb diets: meat, fish, poultry, eggs, cheese are always ok. Most veggies are ok like many beans, carrots, and avocados. Low-carbohydrate diets can seem to have high fat foods because the energy is necessary to the body. For obese diabetic patients, a doctor’s assistance may be needed to figure how to adapt the diet to meet all physical needs.

There is no doubt that low carbohydrate diets are going to stay popular and common. Carbohydrates are a real negative for diabetics, so this option is great for those who struggle with diabetes.
