How To Not Get Taken Advantage Of When Starting A Home Business

December 30, 2009 · Filed Under General

Often times people are so eager to work from home that they fall hook, line and sinker for the nearest scam.  Money and dreams get lost when this unfortunate thing happens.  Don’t become part of that statistic.  To ensure that you don’t get scammed take the necessary background steps.  These steps include: researching the Better Business Bureau, investigating the source of income of the business and carefully reading the terms of the opportunity.

The first thing you should do to avoid a home business scam is research the Better Business Bureau.  The BBB helps consumers by providing information on potention business scams while also providing positive testimonials for those businesses that are exceptional.  You can either call them or look up your desired opportunity in their online database.  Whether or not a particular home business is a scam, the BBB will show you through a rating system they use.

Once you’re done with that step, have a look at where exactly the earnings of the home business are coming from.  Why should you do this?  Well, you want to make sure that a pyramid scheme is not the structure of the business.  What do I mean by a pyramid scheme?  It is where money from new members are used to pay old ones, it is a fraudulent business arrangement.  The scheme fails when new members stop joining.

To avoid pyramid schemes, you need to see if a home business is making money from things outside of membership.  Consider Avon, a home business opportunity where you sell makeup and other products.  The main way you make money is buy selling the beauty products.  Correct, you could earn money from signups, but that is not the only source of the opportunities income.  This is the reason behind their being considered a genuine home business opportunity.

In any case, when you got that message, you’re ready to attempt the last step: Study with care the terms and conditions of the home business.  A big red flag should be going up for you if you are being promised millions for not much work, or asked to send out promotional materials.  Either one of these might mean that this is a fraudulent mail order business.

In conclusion, if you follow the steps laid out in this article, you can avoid a home business scam.  And, doing this, you could not only save your money but even protect your dignity.
