Leadership demands respect, and has nothing at all to do with ‘like’. It took me a long time to realize that ‘respect’ has nothing to do with ‘like’ and, likewise, ‘leadership’ does not have to go hand in hand with ‘telling people how to do something’. It has everything to do with empowering them to do things for themselves.
To be a leader, we need to first start respecting ourselves. We need to are absolute best at home and at work and give both of them the level of respect that they deserve. More importantly, we all know that we can not expect respect from others if we don’t respect ourselves.
As a child, we don’t so much expect, we naturally assume, that our parents will be our leaders. At school, we look to our teachers to be leaders. As adults, in every single one of our daily transactions, there is an expectation of leadership from the many people that we come into contact with.
We expect the boss to lead the company. We expect the shop assistant to ‘be in charge’ for us so that we can select and pay for our goods. We expect the bank clerk to lead us through our financial transactions.
Every day we expect leadership in others. But what of the leadership we give to others? If we expect those around us to be in leadership for us, shouldn’t we shoulder some of the responsibility of leadership too? Shouldn’t we be demanding that we are also a role model?
So, the next time you are standing in line at the bank, or cussing the traffic warden for leaving a ticket on your car, ask yourself this: Do you stand in leadership for yourself and others in every area of your life?
If you are fulfilling your duty as a leader, congratulations, I can guarantee that your life and your business are thriving right now. But if not, before you point and accuse other people, remember that that you are no better than them, and people you know are pointing at and blaming you.

Leadership Communication And How To Engage Employees
When we think of leadership communication most organizations focus on information tools. These include intranet sites, staff magazines, CEO blog, Town Hall meetings and so on. Whilst all these employee communication methods are to be applauded, they inform employees about what is going on. To truly engage employees in the process of change, for instance, a merger or acquisition, a re-organization, financial results or corporate social responsibility, leadership communication methods need to be designed to actively engage employees.
The fundamental difference between employee engagement and information is the former focuses on changing employee behaviour to support the achievement of business objectives. The latter is about providing information to employees about what will change, when and why.
These following 5 tips illustrate how you can ensure leadership communication will achieve desired business outcomes.
1. The first tip is to establish whether the tools and methods you are currently using as a leader to communicate with employees are engagement strategies or information tools. So gather all the tools used and identify all the methods used, their frequency, intended audience, whether they are one way or two way communication vehicles and review the key messages.
2. The second step is essential for leadership communication and it is all about creating the “Aha!’ moment for employees, that is when they finally understand exactly why the changes are being introduced, how the change will impact them and what they can do to ensure the change is successful.
3. This third step is about conducting focus group research to find out what employees actually think about a particular topic and then what information you have to counter their views and to create a change in how they think. The objective is to find out what information will make employees stop and say, “Aha! now I get it”. Once you have the answer to this it is easy to design engagement strategies that will focus employees on the change to the organization and the work that they do.
The use of focus groups is useful as they allow issues to be discussed further and often they reveal issues or ideas which you would not have considered prior to the group session. I recommend that focus groups are generally held for one and a half hours duration and in groups with no more than 8 – 10 participants. The role of the facilitator is to lead the discussion but leave the actual dialogue to the participants, and then to steer them back to the main issue if employees have gone off on a tangent or to ensure that all the topics that you need to cover within the allocated timeframe are covered. The benefits of a well facilitated focus group are that they will identify the key messages for your leadership communication strategies as they relate to a particular business issue.
4. This fourth step is all about what you do next with the outcomes of the focus groups. It is important that you have identified clearly what employees actually think about a particular issue and the reason for that opinion. If that opinion needs to change then you need to identify specific data that is based on facts to successfully create a paradigm shift in the thinking of employees. Once you do this you will create the “Aha!” moment.
5. The fifth step is to take the key information that you have gathered from the focus groups and then identify a business issue that you feel certain your transformational leadership strategies can impact. The advantage is that by making use of that information you are then able to create a personalized leadership communication approach that will be measured against business results.
Once you have gathered all this information you then need to design leadership communication strategies that engage employees around the one central message. Many of these employee communication strategies will actively involve employees in some aspect of change by designing communication methods that will require employees to participate. These engagement strategies are then supplemented by communication information tools.
